Holiday Leftovers á la Loaded

We made it through the holidays gang, congratulations! And despite all of the food comas, we're somehow ready to eat again. If you're repeatedly opening your fridge and closing it defeatedly because leftovers are boring, we recommend that you zhuzh them in the spirit of Loaded! The beautiful thing about holiday food is that generally everything complements each other, so pretty much all of it is compatible when piled together in a layered bowl. Here’s the 4-step process:

Step 1: Begin with a Bowl

Bowls are prime Loaded dishes, set deep with higher walls to better contain all the precariously balanced toppings. You could probably get away with a pasta dish, but it's going to limit how high you can top, just FYI. Bowls for the win!

Step 2: Start Loading with Starch

We know you had at *least* one potato dish featured on your holiday table. Roasted, mashed, baked; however they were presented they were definitely present. And now they will serve as a brilliant base for the mountain you're about to build!

Step 3: Pack on a Protein

Are you a turkey family, a ham family, a wild salmon family, or an all of the above family? Doesn't matter, any meat will do or you're free to skip it, too! Ooh look we rhymed. Anyway if you are an omnivore or pescatarian, now is the time to shred or chop your protein and sprinkle it onto those potatoes with as much or as little abandon as you please.

Step 4: Top it with Sides

They may look like the supporting cast, but for the purposes of this operation all the veggie side dishes get to take on a new role as toppings. Roasted root vegetables, pan seared Brussels sprouts, mixed mushrooms, baked string beans, roasted cauliflower--you can make anything a topping if you try hard and believe in yourself. Or, y'know, ladle it onto the bowl you're building.

Step 5: Spoon on the Sauce

And for the final touch, get saucey! You truly cannot go wrong with gravy, it's as classic as it gets. If you're one for more tart complexity, though, you might wanna heat up your cranberry sauce to give it a looser, saucier consistency that's better for pouring over. Or you can make like a 7 year old and douse it all in ketchup, we won't judge.
